What am I running from? By Luke Cullen
I always used to watch people running and think, "Why? What are they running from?"
It might be a dumb question, but it’s something that has crossed my mind plenty of times while training – especially when I realised how much further I had to go.
No matter what stage we are at in life, everyone has a method or vehicle they use to clear their head in some way. It doesn’t mean we are running away from our problems it means we are finding ways to embrace them and keep moving forward.
Whether that’s going out, hitting the gym with a friend, going for a quick ocean swim, it doesn’t matter what it is you do. All that matters is that YOU have an outlet.
Life can move so quick that we get swept away in everything that’s going on and forget to look after ourselves.
Being able to just zone out and be carefree, even if it only lasts a few minutes, is 100 times better than nothing. Obviously running has become that for me – Having over a week off has actually made me miss it (never thought I would say that!) I think more so than anything else I have missed the freedom and release it gives me.
I’ve certainly noticed that I’ve spent a hell of a lot more time worrying about things and making them into bigger things than they actually are.
That’s not the path I want to go down because I know it’s just like running laps of an oval . . . you just keep treading the same path and don’t get anywhere. So don’t ask yourself what are you running from, try looking ahead and think about what you're running towards!
